Every family’s situation is different. Here are answers to the questions we hear most often about Golden Rule Home Care.

About Golden Rule Home Care

What is Golden Rule Home Care?

Golden Rule Home Care is a private home care agency serving seniors and other adults who need assistance to remain safe, comfortable, and independent at home. We provide compassionate, dependable care based on a simple principle: we care for others as we would want our own loved ones to be cared for.

What makes Golden Rule Home Care different?

We are redefining how home care is done by building a premium care model centered on love, dignity, dependability, communication, and excellence. We do more than complete a list of tasks. We truly “see” each person as an individual and provide compassionate care that restores connection, freedom, independence, dignity, and peace of mind for every client and family we serve.

We also recognize that aging, illness, isolation, and loss of independence can leave older adults feeling unwanted, unneeded, or unloved. Through meaningful companionship, personal attention, and respectful involvement in daily life, we work to counter those feelings and remind every client that they are valued, needed, and deeply worthy of care.

What medical conditions do you help your clients with?

Golden Rule Home Care supports clients living with a wide range of medical conditions, chronic illnesses, disabilities, and age-related challenges, including:

  • Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Stroke recovery
  • Heart disease and congestive heart failure
  • Diabetes
  • Arthritis
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Cancer
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Limited mobility, weakness, and frailty
  • Fall risk and balance difficulties
  • Vision or hearing impairment
  • Recovery following surgery, hospitalization, or rehabilitation
  • Conditions requiring hospice or end-of-life support
  • Other chronic or progressive conditions affecting daily living

Our caregivers provide non-medical personal care, companionship, supervision, mobility assistance, meal preparation, medication reminders, and help with daily routines. We create an individualized care plan based on each client’s condition, abilities, preferences, risks, and healthcare-provider instructions.

Golden Rule Home Care does not diagnose or treat medical conditions. Instead, we work alongside families, physicians, nurses, hospice providers, therapists, and other healthcare professionals to help clients remain safe, comfortable, connected, and as independent as possible at home.

What areas do you serve?

We primarily serve Worcester County and surrounding Central Massachusetts communities. We also have the ability to serve all towns in Massachusetts. Contact us to confirm caregiver availability in your city or town.

Is Golden Rule Home Care insured?

Yes. Golden Rule Home Care operates in accordance with applicable Massachusetts requirements and maintains appropriate business and insurance coverage.

Home Care Services

What types of home care services do you provide?

Our caregivers can assist with:

  • Personal care and hygiene
  • Bathing, dressing, and grooming
  • Mobility and transfer assistance
  • Meal preparation
  • Medication reminders
  • Light housekeeping and laundry
  • Transportation and errands
  • Companionship and social engagement
  • Safety supervision

  • Assistance with daily routines, and more

Each care plan is personalized to the client’s needs, preferences, abilities, and living situation.

Do you provide medical or nursing care?

Our primary service is non-medical personal care and companionship. Caregivers may provide medication reminders, observe changes, and communicate concerns, but they do not replace a physician, nurse, or emergency medical provider. When clinical care is needed, we can coordinate with the client’s healthcare professionals and other members of the care team.

Do you provide hourly care?

Yes. We provide scheduled hourly care based on the client’s needs and caregiver availability. Longer and more consistent schedules often allow us to provide greater continuity and reliability.

Do you provide overnight care?

Yes. Overnight care may be available for clients who need supervision, assistance during the night, fall-risk support, toileting assistance, or reassurance for themselves and their families.

Do you provide 24-hour care?

Yes. We can arrange around-the-clock care using a coordinated team of caregivers. This is appropriate for clients who should not be left alone or who need assistance throughout the day and night.

Do you provide live-in care?

Live-in care may be available when the client’s needs, home environment, schedule, and sleeping arrangements meet the requirements for a live-in care plan. We will assess the situation and explain whether live-in or 24-hour shift care is the safer and more appropriate option.

Do you provide respite care?

Yes. Respite care gives family caregivers time to rest, attend appointments, travel, work, or take care of other responsibilities while knowing their loved one is supported.

Can you help after a hospital or rehabilitation stay?

Yes. Our hospital-to-home and rehabilitation transition support can include transportation coordination, meal preparation, mobility assistance, medication reminders, fall-prevention support, and help following the discharge routine established by the healthcare team.

Do you care for people with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia?

Yes. We provide dementia-focused care that emphasizes familiarity, routine, reassurance, safety, dignity, and meaningful engagement. We also help families understand changes in behavior and daily functioning.

Can you assist someone receiving hospice care?

Yes. We can provide non-medical personal care, companionship, comfort support, respite, and assistance with daily needs while working alongside the hospice provider and family.

Can you help clients with limited mobility or a high risk of falling?

Yes. Caregivers can assist with walking, transfers, positioning, toileting, household safety, and established mobility routines. The exact level of assistance will be determined during the assessment.

Do you care for couples?

Yes. We can design a care plan for two people living in the same home. The schedule and rate will depend on the needs of each person and the amount of assistance required.

Caregivers and Quality

Who are your caregivers?

Our caregivers are Certified Home Health Aides, Certified Nursing Assistants, or individuals who hold both credentials. We look for people who demonstrate compassion, dependability, integrity, professionalism, and respect for the people they serve.

Are caregivers screened?

Yes. Caregivers go through an application, interview, credential-verification, reference, and screening process before they are assigned to clients.

Will we have the same caregiver every day?

We make every reasonable effort to provide a consistent care team. Continuity helps caregivers understand the client’s routines, preferences, personality, and changing needs. For schedules requiring many hours of care, more than one caregiver will usually be assigned to provide dependable coverage and prevent caregiver fatigue.

Can we meet the caregiver before services begin?

Whenever scheduling permits, we introduce or carefully match the caregiver before the first regular shift. In urgent situations, services may need to begin quickly, but we will still communicate clearly about the caregiver assigned.

What happens if our regular caregiver cannot come to work?

If a scheduled caregiver becomes unavailable, our team will work to locate a qualified replacement. While no agency can guarantee that every absence will be filled immediately, dependable coverage and clear communication are among our highest priorities.

Can we request a different caregiver?

Yes. A successful relationship requires trust, comfort, and compatibility. If the match does not feel right, contact our office so we can understand the concern and work toward a better solution.

How do you supervise the care being provided?

We conduct planned and unplanned Supervisory Visits, which include an LPN. We maintain communication with clients, families, and caregivers, review concerns, follow up on changes, and update care plans and instructions when needed. Families are also encouraged to contact us whenever they have a question or notice a change.

Care Plans and Communication

How is the care plan created?

The process begins with a conversation and assessment. We learn about the client’s medical conditions, health history, daily routines, mobility, personal care needs, preferences, home environment, safety concerns, and family support. We then create a personalized plan that explains what assistance should be provided and how the client prefers to receive it.

Can the care plan change over time?

Yes. Home care needs often change. We can adjust the schedule, duties, level of support, or caregiver team as the client’s condition and circumstances evolve.

How will my family receive updates?

Communication preferences are established when care begins. Updates may be provided by telephone, email, care notes that are maintained and kept in the home, or conversations with an authorized family representative.

What happens if a caregiver notices a change in condition?

The caregiver will follow our communication procedures and report significant concerns to the appropriate office team member and authorized family contact. Emergencies are directed to 911 or the appropriate emergency provider. Golden Rule Home Care does not diagnose medical conditions, but we take observations and changes seriously.

Scheduling and Getting Started

How quickly can services begin?

The starting time depends on the client’s needs, location, requested schedule, assessment, and caregiver availability. In urgent situations, we will make every reasonable effort to begin care as quickly and safely as possible. We have often been able to start care within hours in emergency situations.

Is there a minimum number of hours?

Minimum scheduling requirements may apply and can vary depending on the location, time of day, type of care, and caregiver availability. Longer shifts generally allow us to provide more consistent staffing.

Can we increase or decrease the schedule?

Yes. Contact our office when a schedule change is needed. Changes are subject to the service agreement, required notice, and caregiver availability.

Do you provide care on weekends and holidays?

Yes, depending on caregiver availability. Weekend, overnight, and holiday rates or scheduling requirements may apply.

How do we get started?

Getting started is simple:

  1. Contact Golden Rule Home Care.
  2. Tell us about your situation and immediate concerns.
  3. Schedule a care consultation or assessment.
  4. Review the recommended care plan and schedule.
  5. Complete the service agreement.
  6. Meet your care team and begin services.

There is no obligation simply to call and discuss your needs.

Rates and Payment

How much does home care cost?

The cost depends on the type of care, number of hours, schedule, location, complexity of the client’s needs, and whether care is hourly, overnight, live-in, or around the clock. After learning about your situation, we will provide a clear explanation of the applicable rates and recommended schedule.

Is home care covered by Medicare?

Golden Rule Home Care is a private pay home care agency. Medicare generally does not pay for ongoing non-medical custodial home care, such as long-term companionship, bathing assistance, meal preparation, or supervision. Medicare may cover limited home health services when specific medical and eligibility requirements are met. Families should confirm their individual coverage directly with Medicare or their insurance provider. If Medicare is the preferred method of payment, we can help you locate a provider.

Do you accept long-term care insurance?

Yes. Many long-term care insurance policies reimburse policyholders for qualifying home care services. Coverage varies significantly. Families should contact their insurer to confirm eligibility, waiting periods, daily benefit limits, and documentation requirements. We can help you through this process, so just let us know that your loved one has a policy.

Do you accept Medicaid or MassHealth?

No. Golden Rule Home Care is a private pay agency. Coverage and eligibility depend on the individual program and service arrangement. Contact our office to discuss the alternatives currently available.

Are there contracts or long-term commitments?

Home care is provided under a Service Agreement that explains the schedule, rates, responsibilities, notice requirements, and cancellation terms. Services can be cancelled with 24 hours advance notice, simply with a phone call.

Choosing the Right Care

How do I know when it is time for home care?

Home care may be helpful when you notice:

  • Missed meals or medications
  • Falls or increasing weakness
  • Difficulty bathing or dressing
  • Memory loss or confusion
  • Loneliness or withdrawal
  • Unsafe driving
  • Poor housekeeping or spoiled food
  • Caregiver exhaustion
  • Frequent hospital visits
  • A loved one who should no longer be left alone

You do not have to wait for a crisis. Beginning with a small amount of assistance can often prevent larger problems.

What if my loved one refuses help?

Resistance is common because accepting care may feel like losing independence. We recommend introducing assistance respectfully, emphasizing companionship, safety, convenience, and the goal of remaining at home. Our team can help families plan that conversation and introduce care gradually when appropriate.

Is home care appropriate during an emergency?

Golden Rule Home Care is not an emergency medical service. Call 911 for chest pain, difficulty breathing, severe bleeding, suspected stroke, loss of consciousness, a serious fall, or any immediate threat to health or safety.
